Laboratory abstract

In order to provide the fundamental principles for designing an environment, the Studio focuses on the topic of living in minimal spaces. Encouraged to explore alternative solutions that meet the needs of contemporary minimal living, the students are asked to develop a project based on a real context. To define their own design language, they are invited to choose among the strategies of the best interior design tradition, as illustrated in the book "Da spazio nasce spazio" by Luciano Crespi.

Our project is entitled “La Tana del Bianconiglio” (“The White Rabbit’s Hole” ), named after “Alice in Wonderland”. We wanted to create a disorienting yet astonishing atmosphere, like the one depicted in the novel. The tenants are workawayers, young travelers from all around the world who collaborate to turn this flat into a cultural hub, coordinating various activities in English. During the planning phase we drew inspiration from Alessandro Mendini, especially from the concepts of decoration and collage. We aimed to design stagy, bizarre and theatrical rooms.
