Laboratory abstract

Over recent years our design studio titled "Open Neighborhoodsseeks" seeks to read, interpret and rethink a specific value of “Interior and Spatial Design”, exploring the vast “open” field of design research related to the deepest and most erratic characters of inhabiting spaces. The theme for the Contest Design Studio 1 (A.A. 2019-20) was born in conjunction with the news of the 2026 Winter Olympics assignment to the city of Milan (together with Cortina). In view of this great event, students were asked to design a "table", intended as a communicative object installed in the urban space, to "inform", "invade", "educate" and "exhibit" the Winter Olympics, with the aim of creating consensus and publicity over the public. Starting from a preliminary research work, based on a space-time map of Milan related to the event (before-during-after), the 12 projects developed have taken on various connotations, always gathered by the metaphorical – and not – theme of the "table": from historical memory to sports education, from sustainability to experimental narrative experiences and community spaces.

In preparation for the Winter Olympic Games Milano-Cortina 2026, BOB will help the citizens of Milan – and not – to approach the games by having access to video contents and statistics of past and future Olympics. In fact, multimedia stations located within a modular cubic structure will show information related to the Winter Olympics as well as allowing access to historical archives of the 1956 Cortina Games. Through the touch screens it will be possible to access information about the athletes, the medal stand and discover the structures hosting the future Italian Olympic Games. Finally, during the games, visitors can follow live coverage of the competitions held in the various sports facilities that will be the focus of the Olympics. Around the core of the installation there is a circular slide, referring to the bobsleigh slopes of the Olympics, which allows the user to approach the winter games in a more playful way. During the descent, the user activates the sound of the bobsleigh on the track that will follow him/her throughout his/her “path”, thus ensuring that other potential users who are near the installation can also hear the passage of the “bobsleigh” around the centre of the cubic reticular structure that supports it and can be recalled and potentially involved.
