Laboratory abstract

Over recent years our design studio titled "Open Neighborhoodsseeks" seeks to read, interpret and rethink a specific value of “Interior and Spatial Design”, exploring the vast “open” field of design research related to the deepest and most erratic characters of inhabiting spaces. The theme for the Contest Design Studio 1 (A.A. 2019-20) was born in conjunction with the news of the 2026 Winter Olympics assignment to the city of Milan (together with Cortina). In view of this great event, students were asked to design a "table", intended as a communicative object installed in the urban space, to "inform", "invade", "educate" and "exhibit" the Winter Olympics, with the aim of creating consensus and publicity over the public. Starting from a preliminary research work, based on a space-time map of Milan related to the event (before-during-after), the 12 projects developed have taken on various connotations, always gathered by the metaphorical – and not – theme of the "table": from historical memory to sports education, from sustainability to experimental narrative experiences and community spaces.

The intent of the installation is to trigger a connection between Milan and the Olympics by recreating the sound context perceived by athletes and spectators during the competitions. The user inside the space moves freely in the installation, with a time of permanence linked to the length of the path. The immersive audio creates moments of pause, inside the installation, expanding the time along the way. The immersive audio will be played from some points inside the installation through some headphones. The audio is composed of sounds related to the human body during the practice of sport and noises associated with sport. Each point corresponds to a specialty present at the Olympics, for a total of 15 different audios and each audio is associated to a different light projection. The installation is located in Piazza dell’Arco della Pace, with the entrance facing Parco Sempione. The area is located in a strategic point within the city of Milan, thanks to the proximity of Parco Sempione and Cadorna Station. It is also part of a tourist area which includes the Arena Civica, the Triennale di Milano, Castello Sforzesco and the Arco della Pace itself. In addition to being located in an area of great affluence, the arch and the square frame the installation, embracing it and highlighting it in the exact centre.
