Located on the third floor of the Famar building, in the industrial district of Baranzate (MI), “The Jumble” provides for the creation of smart-working stations and fab-labs in places that until 2011 hosted a pharmaceutical company. This idea is inspired by reading the “avanzi” concept from a specific perspective, in this case identified in the (Un)Heimlich metaphor (the Freudian uncanny). The main focus is to mantain unaltered the original spaces. The proximity to the Expo area (future MIND) determined the choice to mantain the work function, although a necessity to adopt a smart-working approach has been detected, in order to make the place more integrated with the MIND future context. The uncanny elements are many. First of all, the work-fun alternation: the same spaces that during the week host workers and makers, in the weekend become escape-room or indoor paintball places. Other interventions leverage on the contrast between familiarity and extraneousness, such as in the spaces where is created a domestic atmosphere, with the addition of elements that increase the user’s comfort.
