Laboratory abstract

The Laboratory of Ephemeral/Temporary Spaces experiments with how spaces and places for communities can be designed through the senses and time. The sense_time-based design is in fact addressed to a design that starts from the experience of places, from the sensory and temporal perception and from an aesthetic that wants to emancipate itself from the dictatorship of sight. The involvement of the digital technology, contemplated in this approach, underlines that the body remains always and still the “house” of our emotions.

As a discipline, ceramic art can be seen as a performance. The project allows visitors to watch the “performance” and observe the process behind the making of an art piece. The residence becomes a place to perform and we can compare its areas to the spaces of a theatre. Although the concept is based on the performative quality of this art discipline, the main aim is to design a multi-functional space where two artists can live, work, and exhibit their art. The starting point of the spatial organization is creating different zones with adequate levels of privacy and accessibility. With an open plan and only 3 partitions inserted in the space, the residence starts as a “blank canvas” that changes with time and transforms during the “performance” as the art creates the space.
