Laboratory abstract

The Studio “Insertions, Strategies, and Speculations_Constructed Intentions: a New Community of Creative Production, Innovation & Design” is a place of inquiry, investigation, instigation, resolution and expression. The specific focus of the studio, particularly at its start is tectonic, material, constructed insertions into an existing, historical context, such as Meridiana Building into Villa Arconati, Fondazione Augusto Rancilio in Bollate, Italy. The final program/scenario designed for Meridiana spaces, by students, is about general studio working spaces.

The Meridiana building is the result of a collection of layers. The passing of time has changed it through the difference of functions, the age of the elements, the use of materials. The purpose of our actions inside the building is to make the temporal stratification even more visible. In the body of Meridiana we have cut two voids interrupting the rhythm of the building structure, creating new scenarios of movement in the space. The two voids are placed in critical points of the spatial program, creating the entrance and the common working area.
