Laboratory abstract

The Laboratory, in order to provide the foundations for the design of an environment, focuses on the theme of minimal living. Stimulated to explore alternative solutions that meet the needs of minimal contemporary living, students developed a project based on a real context. To define their own design language, they were invited to choose between the strategies of the best tradition of interior design, illustrated in the book "From space is born space".

The space is designed for international concert performers, and organized for their personal needs and for an exchange with the community. It is divided into rehearsal, performance, children teaching, and musical co-working spaces. Ettore Sottsass’s link with the primitive and the connection between men and the cosmos are inspirational for the choice of simple and regular forms, and bright and pervasive colors that recall an idea of absoluteness. Each space is associated with a part of the human body according to its function and, reconciling the musical and Sottsass’ visions, each one has a different color depending on the musical tempo related to the related part of the body: dark colors for lento or lentissimo; warm and intense for andante, veloce and velocissimo. Furniture textures also differ according to the intensity of the sound associated with function-related noises: continuous lines for a forte sound, dashed lines for mezzo forte/mezzo piano and dots for piano.
