Laboratory abstract

The primary goal of the studio is to inspire students to recognize the elements that characterize an interior, enhancing its identity. Particular attention is given to the study of the preceptive principles: the functional and fruitful aspects and the material-technological consistency. The studio alternates theoretical and practical activities, providing a continuous and experimental training in order to teach how to see and to communicate a project.

The theme that characterizes the design experience of this year is “Passage”, a delimited space, that define a connection path between two different environments. Passage evokes the idea of “crossing”, of “movement”, and it’s the result of a succession of actions and experiences in a specific space and time, that creates and transforms the project of the passage. The project practice provides for students: – The identification of a context, a project theme (such as a path in prison, an entrance to a park, …) and its distinctive features – The analysis of the phases of the studied path – The furtive and material aspects of the space. The Leporello, a single folded sheet, is the final composition of the project and consists of different representation techniques. Each teamwork was asked to identify a thematic link with another group. The evidence of these thematic links generated a crossword puzzle.
