Laboratory abstract

The Laboratory proposes to instruct a pathway through which to lead the student to the acquisition of specific knowledge for the exercise of design, as well as for the learning and experimentation of tools and techniques for the reading, interpretation and design of specific spaces of use. In this pathway reference is made to the places linked to the design of hospitality in relation to a sequence of different "points of view" from which to look at the genesis and evolution of certain sedimented typologies as well as the emergence of innovative typologies. The student will be initiated, initially, to the understanding of the dynamics that invest hospitality spaces (from the historical evolution to the typological analysis; from the study of current trends to the research of paradigmatic case studies) to arrive then at the construction of a project concept in a context assigned by the teacher. In particular, this involves the design of hybrid spaces, straddling the line between low-cost hospitality and spaces dedicated to study and work. The workshop activity is supplemented by a series of contributions from external guests on metadesign issues. The course also includes an innovative didactic component, delivered through the MOOC "Introducing Metadesign" specially prepared for the Metaproject Workshops: students will use the online content and explore the specific topics covered by the videos independently.

The journey through the metaproject path allowed the development of the BeFrei project: a hybrid accommodation inspired by the lifestyle and visuals of the Freitag brand. The hospitality offered allows for personalisation of both the private and communal spaces, with the objective of promoting socialisation. The path began by researching the theme of hospitality, the Tortona area, the brand selected, the client’s requirements and future trends. The combination of all these factors helped to develop personas and a vision for a primary concept. This first phase of work was re-elaborated after discovering that Casa Base would be the venue for the project and taking into account the needs of the new committee. From this, it emerged that there was a greater need for shared workspace in the communal areas and an adjusting of the room sizes to the new location. BeFrei is a unique accommodation that provides full personalisation, an experience filled with possibility, and is guaranteed to make any trip unforgettable.
