Laboratory abstract

The Laboratory proposes to instruct a pathway through which to lead the student to the acquisition of specific knowledge for the exercise of design, as well as for the learning and experimentation of tools and techniques for the reading, interpretation and design of specific spaces of use. In this pathway reference is made to the places linked to the design of hospitality in relation to a sequence of different "points of view" from which to look at the genesis and evolution of certain sedimented typologies as well as the emergence of innovative typologies. The student will be initiated, initially, to the understanding of the dynamics that invest hospitality spaces (from the historical evolution to the typological analysis; from the study of current trends to the research of paradigmatic case studies) to arrive then at the construction of a project concept in a context assigned by the teacher. In particular, this involves the design of hybrid spaces, straddling the line between low-cost hospitality and spaces dedicated to study and work. The workshop activity is supplemented by a series of contributions from external guests on metadesign issues. The course also includes an innovative didactic component, delivered through the MOOC "Introducing Metadesign" specially prepared for the Metaproject Workshops: students will use the online content and explore the specific topics covered by the videos independently.

The Creative Human Hostel is a space designed for everyone. The hostel wants to present itself to its clients as a safe and welcoming place, a place to express one’s creativity in a city like Milan and in a neighbourhood rich in artistic inspiration like Zona Tortona. Self-expression, in fact, is rendered through shared activities and workshops. The project takes into account current trends and the relationship with the territory, which is why environmentally sustainable solutions have been adopted. The identification of values and a common identity between the COS client and the hostel, and the maintenance of these as points of reference, was fundamental throughout the process to arrive at a coherent design. Through the concept, the design of spaces in relation to man, the hostel wants to send a clear message: every individual is the same but at the same time is different and unique.
