Laboratory abstract

The Laboratory proposes to instruct a pathway through which to lead the student to the acquisition of specific knowledge for the exercise of design, as well as for the learning and experimentation of tools and techniques for the reading, interpretation and design of specific spaces of use. In this pathway reference is made to the places linked to the design of hospitality in relation to a sequence of different "points of view" from which to look at the genesis and evolution of certain sedimented typologies as well as the emergence of innovative typologies. The student will be initiated, initially, to the understanding of the dynamics that invest hospitality spaces (from the historical evolution to the typological analysis; from the study of current trends to the research of paradigmatic case studies) to arrive then at the construction of a project concept in a context assigned by the teacher. In particular, this involves the design of hybrid spaces, straddling the line between low-cost hospitality and spaces dedicated to study and work. The workshop activity is supplemented by a series of contributions from external guests on metadesign issues. The course also includes an innovative didactic component, delivered through the MOOC "Introducing Metadesign" specially prepared for the Metaproject Workshops: students will use the online content and explore the specific topics covered by the videos independently.

The Hostearth hostel project was created to create a welcoming space, close to nature and elegant, inclusive and modern in Milan’s Tortona area, in the current BASE location. Based on the design philosophy and taxonomy of the Aesop brand, Hostearth embraces all the values and inspirations of the Australian brand, resulting in a space that is close to the history of the place where it is located, sober and elegant, and transparent in its communication and particularly attentive to the customer experience. Contact with nature, a fundamental aspect of Aesop’s style, is interpreted in the hostel through two paths: one inside the various rooms and the other in the common area. Hostearth has four types of rooms: single, double, quadruple and sextuple, and each refers to one of the elements of nature: fire, air, earth and water. The communal space, on the other hand, as well as dedicating a space to yoga, focuses on the five senses, sight and hearing with projections on nature, touch with a workshop for creating oils and essences, smell with various fragrances, and taste with a small bistro serving dishes inspired by the four elements of nature.
