Laboratory abstract

Everybody on board. The cruise ship is a huge container of functions and activities, subject to rapid change in relation to the differentiated and always new demands of travellers. On board there are areas comparable to zones of cities, characterised by a mix of commercial spaces, spaces for getting together, for sport, for food consumption, equipment and spaces dedicated to culture and entertainment, cabins similar to hotel rooms. The programme therefore addresses some contemporary interior design issues in a particular context. Particular attention will be given to the relationship between design and the environment, inviting students to deepen their environmental sensitivity.

Inspired by Lewis Carrol’s book ”Alice in Wonderland”, we wanted to materialize the two phases of the dream, the N-REM phase, and the REM phase, within the Promenade. The idea is to represent the N-REM phase of the dream in the Promenade common areas, or rather, where the facades of the locals communicate with each other. The lines, which represent the creative flow of our mind, expand throughout the entire Promenade, from the floor to the facades, up to entering the individual environments. Thus, a parallel reality is formed where all the environments are connected through lines that vary according to the theme of the room and assume different shapes. Each ambient has a different facade and an entrance that transports the visitor to another reality. The passage towards the latter is accentuated by a frame: it becomes a threshold through which you enter small worlds of their own, unique rooms of their type where physical laws and logic fail. The individual ambientes, on the other hand, represent the REM phase, or the creative one, made up of colorful and surreal scenarios, the result of pure fantasy. Upon entering the Promenade, the visitor feels like he’s in an alternative reality, made up of suggestions, of presences only hinted at, but also of portals towards small independent and amazing worlds.
