Laboratory abstract

Over recent years our design laboratory, under the common title “OPEN NEIGHBORHOODS. For a genetic evolution of the urban metabolism”, seeks to read, interpret and rethink the contemporary value of the “Interior Design” discipline exploring the vast “open” field of design research related to the deepest and most erratic characters of inhabiting spaces. The subject of the NEW INTERIORS 1 Studio (A.A. 2020/2021), titled “Marchiodi Proximity”, was the historic complex of the Istituto Marchiondi, designed by Vittoriano Viganò in 1953-57. A masterpiece of 20th century architectural history, placed under the protection of the Superintendence of Monumental Heritage, but which has been in a state of total abandonment for decades. The theme of the project starts from the idea of “regenerating” - and thus revalorizing and re-functionalizing - the Marchiondi, accepting its fascinating state of “archaeological ruin” and working around this monument, creating original and stimulating spaces of proximity between art and social fruition, with the aim of activating a new cultural pole of international level in the Baggio milanese district.

From the analysis and reading of today’s Marchiondi, conquered by a luxuriant spontaneous vegetation that has given it a new identity, we have identified some characters: horizontality and the game of positive-negative. Sensations that the project, in reviving the site, intends to make perceive to those who will visit the park through a path that crosses it and opens in four main spaces. These areas, differentiated by size, type of green and relationship with the existing building, are dedicated to the exhibition of sculptures, installations and works of environmental art. The intervention provides for the addition of ornamental plants and small shrubs to contrast the monochrome of the surrounding environment and the creation of a cover that creates a horizontal sign in continuity with the architectural volumes.
