Laboratory abstract

The typology, layout and organization of the SUPERMARKET present an extraordinary uniformity to the eyes of common people. A closer look reveals that there is, on the contrary, a variety of formats with substantial differences, especially in terms of strategy and service. Today, even the most traditional formats are opening up to significant changes that affect the entire retail sector and urge new studies of the effects they had and that they are having on the evolution of this type of stores. The course proposes a "design oriented" reading of these trends in relation to a highly competitive sector that is facing the pressure of new shopping options and greater sensitivity for the environment and health (to name a few: reduction of plastics in the packaging, transparency and traceability of food production, rising of bio and eco-sustainability products).

Hybreat is a new supermarket format. Our goal was to trasform a passageway into a place to stay, a hybrid space where experiences are multiplied thanks to the interlacing of various functions. Hybreat hosts an organic vegetable roof garden, an expired products sale area, “air factories” (indoor air recyling system) and a 2.0 deli hosting a non-conventional cuisine. The study and reading area which presents itself as the first distinguishing element that welcomes consumers, consists of cubes connected to the large staircase leading to the green roof. The decision to combine many functions comes from the idea that today it always seems not to have enough time, so we wanted to create a place that would allow customers to have what is needed at hand through a close integration of activities and thanks to multifunctional hybrid furniture and innovative means of payment like “just walk out technology” similar to Amazon Go style.
