Laboratory abstract

Among the many practices dedicated to body care, physical exercise is an indispensable activity not only for health but also as a source of psychological well-being. The laboratory has deepened the design of a structure dedicated to indoor and outdoor sports in relation to new trends, technologies and materials, putting the body and mind at the center of the project. The design exercise was set in the Campus of the Politecnico di milano and supported by the technical and administrative board of the Faculty in relation to the future development programs of the University.

Starting from the concept of “Piazza” defined as a “Free area which opens in an urban pattern and serves as place of reunion for the citizens”, we have identified its characterizing elements. The purpose of the project was to transform the grandstand, often perceived as a closed and delimited space, in a reference point for the neighborhood and for the students, exactly like a square, completely integrated in the urban pattern. The proposed solution starts from the access routes to the main grandstand. The creation of two lateral ramps provides total accessibility and define a panoramic promenade, which then splits in more areas displaced all over the terraces to offer the possibility of a convivial space for families and groups. Inside, the central space has classic architectural elements and acts as a gallery with two porticos, where some commercial activities are situated. In the locker rooms some semicircular seats were introduced to create team spirit and sense of belonging.
