Laboratory abstract

In the post-pandemic phase, cities need to be imagined as an open and permeable entity: “It is all about making more permeable the space that connects the interior and exterior, more horizontal, to build it in more flexible ways”. This is the direction that spaces have to follow, creating proximity places where we live, work, eat together, spend free time and enjoy cultural events: hybrid and changeable areas that host different functions and offer services simultaneously. The design lab focused on the spaces at the ground in the urban context, on the transformation these places are going through and on the relationship between the inside and the outside. On one side, shop windows, sidewalks and parking areas were considered as pursuance of interiors. On the other side, students were asked to imagine interiors as much hybrid as they could, enhancing their value of being versatile and meaningful if well studied designed. Three bars and restaurants, in three different districts of Milan, were selected; students focused on them starting from the analysis of their users, their location in the cityscape and the pre-existing interior architecture. The aim was to explore new ways of hybridization these places could host.

We have observed contemporary urban behaviors and designed hybrid, changeable, transformable places that work between inside and outside, between private space for public use and public space for temporary private use, interpreting the shop window and the sidewalk or the square as a necessary extroversion. of closed space. The design process is divided into successive phases: a phase of analysis and reading of the context, a phase of research of best-practices and design inspirations and trends, a phase of concept development and project of its communication. The project developed by us proposes the redesign of the Ruffini Bar and the creation of an outdoor area. Starting from the analysis of the neighborhood and future trends, we have obtained a space that hybridizes the functions of a conventional bar with two new functions that aim to overcome the barrier imposed by digital screens. The bar becomes a place to try on clothing and accessories from shops that only have e-commerce and to meet people overcoming the limit of chat and video calls.
