Laboratory abstract

In the post-pandemic phase, cities need to be imagined as an open and permeable entity: “It is all about making more permeable the space that connects the interior and exterior, more horizontal, to build it in more flexible ways”. This is the direction that spaces have to follow, creating proximity places where we live, work, eat together, spend free time and enjoy cultural events: hybrid and changeable areas that host different functions and offer services simultaneously. The design lab focused on the spaces at the ground in the urban context, on the transformation these places are going through and on the relationship between the inside and the outside. On one side, shop windows, sidewalks and parking areas were considered as pursuance of interiors. On the other side, students were asked to imagine interiors as much hybrid as they could, enhancing their value of being versatile and meaningful if well studied designed. Three bars and restaurants, in three different districts of Milan, were selected; students focused on them starting from the analysis of their users, their location in the cityscape and the pre-existing interior architecture. The aim was to explore new ways of hybridization these places could host.

“Ruffini Writing Bar” is a bar that already expresses its concept from its name: a place where you can eat and write. The customer can write a letter to himself or to others, to be sent in the immediate future or a little further on time, elevating the bar as “the guardian of time”. After an analysis of the different writing habits spread among the people, it was found out that every person writes in a unique way, thus they have different needs such as: posture, atmosphere, silence and the presence or absence of other people. Therefore, micro-spaces were an organic consequence that have developed in the location, and that differ from each other in the lighting, the arrangement, the color and the different seating. The bar thus has the aim of accompanying the customer through an experience, completed by food and drink and the customization of their letters. The concluding experience ends years later in the memory of a once received letter.
